When the Cat D6 Makes More Sense
The D6 is usually the better fit for finish grading, wet-ground site prep, road shoulders, pads, subdivision work, utility backfill, embankment shaping, and jobs where lower ground pressure and VPAT blade control matter more than raw blade volume. It is also easier to position for contractors that need a dozer that can move between smaller jobs without turning every haul into a major permit exercise.
When the Cat D8 Makes More Sense
The D8 makes more sense when the work is production dozing, ripping support, landfill cover, quarry work, heavy roadbuilding, high-volume site prep, or long pushes where blade capacity and drawbar performance reduce cost per cubic yard. It costs more to own, haul, fuel, and undercarriage, but it can still be cheaper per production unit when the job is big enough.
