Fuel Cost Tool

Equipment Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate gallons per hour, diesel spend, DEF reserve, maintenance reserve, wear reserve, running cost per hour, and annual running cost.

Choose a published machine preset or enter custom horsepower. Use the result for planning and job costing, then verify real fleet numbers with fuel logs, telematics, oil samples, and OEM service documentation.

Hourly Running Cost
Annual Running Spend

Includes estimated fuel, a DEF allowance, maintenance, and wear reserves only. Excludes depreciation, financing, insurance, taxes, operator labor, transport, and profit. Add these separately before setting a rental rate or bid. The DEF allowance is a planning assumption; set aside no DEF expense for machines without SCR.

What This Calculator Answers

Equipment fuel cost per hour, excavator fuel burn, dozer hourly cost, annual fleet fuel budget, DEF reserve, and maintenance reserve planning.

What It Does Not Replace

OEM fuel tables, telematics, dealer inspections, oil analysis, operator logs, and site-specific production studies still matter for final bids.

Best Next Step

Compare the machine against alternatives, then confirm specs and maintenance intervals before using the number in a quote.

Heavy Equipment Fuel Cost Formula

The calculator blends two planning signals: the published fuel burn estimate stored on the model page and a horsepower-based estimate. The horsepower formula is net horsepower x 0.048 x load factor. This keeps the result tied to the selected machine while still letting the load factor move the estimate up or down.

Use light duty for utility work, grading, road travel, or intermittent loading. Use heavy or severe duty for ripping, hammering, production digging, dense material loading, long pushes, or high ambient temperatures.
