CASE 650M Steering, Tracking and Blade Problems: Separate Ground, Track and Hydraulic Causes

A CASE 650M class dozer that pulls to one side, leaves a poor finish grade, overheats or has blade drift can have several different root causes. Small dozers work in short pushes, tight turns and rough residential or utility sites, so track condition, ground material, blade linkage and hydraulic health all need to be checked before parts are replaced.

  • Inspect track tension, packed material, shoe damage, rollers, idlers, sprockets and guards.
  • Check whether the machine pulls in forward, reverse, both directions or only under load.

Dozer Pulls to One Side

Pulling can come from track tension mismatch, packed material, worn rollers, sprocket wear, brake or drive issues, slope, blade load or operator input. Test on a flat surface after cleaning the undercarriage. If the pull changes direction with travel direction or only appears under load, document that pattern before escalating.

Blade Drift or Poor Finish Grade

Blade drift can be hydraulic, mechanical or setup-related. Inspect cylinder rods, hose leaks, valve response, blade pins, push arms, tilt linkage and cutting edge condition. A worn edge or loose linkage can make the dozer look like it has a control problem when the real issue is grading hardware.

Overheating During Grading

Small dozers can pack screens with dust, leaves, seeds, clay and fine material. Clean the cooling package using the approved method and check fan operation, belt condition, coolant clues and debris traps. If overheating appears only during heavy pushing, compare blade load, travel speed, soil condition and track tension before assuming an engine fault.

Hydraulic Leaks and Slow Blade Response

Slow blade lift, weak tilt or drift should be checked with oil temperature, engine speed and load recorded. Look for external leaks, hose rub, cylinder seal clues, contaminated oil, low oil level and recent repairs. Pressure testing and adjustment should follow the service manual for the exact machine.

When to Stop Work

Stop the machine for uncontrolled blade movement, severe leaks, steering loss, brake concerns, overheating alarms, track derailment risk or any condition that makes the dozer unsafe near workers, utilities, slopes or structures.
