Begin by narrowing the job type (loading, digging, grading, hauling) and the size class that fits your site constraints and production targets. Then validate the non-negotiables first—power delivery and working geometry—before you spend time on attachments, options, or small feature differences.
The “Big 3” for most loaders and excavators
For loaders and excavators, the “Big 3” are typically operating weight, engine power (net vs gross), and working geometry (reach, dump clearance, dig depth). These three usually tell you whether you are comparing the same class of machine.
Then compare performance drivers
- Hydraulic flow and pressure (together—flow alone is not enough).
