A fast, repeatable workflow to narrow the correct size class and compare two models like-for-like—starting with the “Big 3” (weight, power, geometry) and finishing with the differentiators.
Most bad comparisons happen because the shortlist is wrong. This guide gives you a quick workflow that works for loaders, excavators, dozers, graders, and telehandlers. The goal is not to “find the best spec”—it’s to make sure you are comparing the same class of machine before you optimize performance and options.
The 60-second workflow
- Define the job type: loading, digging, grading, hauling, or material handling.
- Pick the size band using operating weight first (it’s usually the best class signal).
- Validate the non-negotiables: engine power standard (net vs gross) and working geometry (reach / clearance / depth).
- Only then compare differentiators: hydraulic flow + pressure, breakout force, lift capacity, cycle times, and stability.
- Shortlist two models, then verify assumptions (configuration, measurement reference points, and standards).
Why this order works
Operating weight, engine power, and geometry usually tell you whether the machines live in the same class. If you skip this step, you can accidentally compare a “bigger” model with a “smaller but newer” model, and the numbers will mislead you. Once you confirm the class, performance drivers become meaningful: hydraulic performance, breakout force, lift, and cycle time differences are often where productivity is won or lost.
Checklist: what to compare first
- Operating weight (confirm the class / size band)
- Engine power (confirm net vs gross and the rating standard)
- Working geometry (reach, dump clearance, dig depth; confirm configuration)

A quick example (how mistakes happen)
Say you search “320 vs 323” and you see stronger breakout force on one model. If the operating weight band is different, you’re not measuring efficiency—you’re measuring class. First confirm weight band, then confirm geometry (dig depth / reach). Only after that does breakout force become a meaningful differentiator.
