Heavy Equipment Troubleshooting Guides

Field troubleshooting guides for hydraulic power loss, overheating, slow functions, leaks, noises, warning codes, tracks, tires, and driveline symptoms.

Start with the symptom, separate operator-visible checks from pressure and electronic tests, and avoid parts swapping until the machine context, fault codes, fluid condition, temperature, and service history are documented.

Troubleshooting by Symptom

High-quality diagnostic content should move from low-risk checks to measured tests. These guides help fleet managers and mechanics document the problem before opening hydraulic, cooling, fuel, or electrical systems.

Hydraulics

Slow Boom or Weak Travel

Check oil level, filter restriction, pilot response, contamination, pump noise, function drift, and measured system pressure before blaming the main pump.

Cooling

Engine Overheating

Inspect coolant level, radiator blockage, hoses, belts, fan operation, thermostat behavior, load conditions, and coolant contamination history.

Fluid Heat

Hydraulic Oil Temperature High

Look for plugged coolers, low oil, aeration, wrong viscosity, contamination, high standby pressure, relief leakage, and fan or cooler bypass issues.

Electrical

Warning Codes and Intermittent Faults

Record active and logged codes, battery voltage, harness damage, connector corrosion, sensor data, and whether the fault appears hot, cold, loaded, or idle.

Diagnostic Workflow Standard

1. Confirm the complaint

Write down the exact symptom, attachment, operator mode, work cycle, slope, oil temperature, ambient temperature, and whether the issue affects one function or the whole machine.

2. Do visual and fluid checks

Look for leaks, blocked coolers, low levels, foaming, burnt odor, abnormal debris, loose clamps, damaged hoses, dirty caps, and missed service intervals.

3. Pull codes and measure

Use active codes, logged events, live sensor data, pressure gauges, cycle-time checks, temperature readings, and oil sample history to narrow the fault.

4. Verify after repair

Repeat the same operating condition, record measured values, document parts replaced, and keep photos or sample IDs with the work order.
