Extended Reach
Definition: Extended reach describes excavators fitted with longer boom and stick configurations to increase working radius. Lift capacity decreases significantly with reach increase; always check the load chart at the required working radius.
Eyebolt
Definition: An eyebolt is a threaded fastener with a loop at the head used as a lifting or lashing point. Working load limit, thread engagement, and angular loading conditions must be verified before use as a rigging attachment.
Face Shovel

Feed Rate
Definition: Feed rate is the speed at which material is introduced into a processing machine such as a crusher, screen, or cold planer. Matching feed rate to machine capacity prevents bridging, overload, and production losses.
Field Capacity
Definition: Field capacity is the maximum amount of work a machine can perform per unit time under actual operating conditions. It accounts for turning time, refueling, and operator efficiency, producing a lower figure than theoretical capacity.
Fill Factor
Definition: Fill factor is the percent of bucket/body volume you actually achieve in real material. It depends on material, operator technique, and bucket design.
Filter Bypass Indicator
Definition: A filter bypass indicator activates when a clogged filter forces fluid to bypass the filter element. It signals that the filter requires immediate replacement to prevent unfiltered fluid from circulating through the system.
Final Drive
Definition: The final drive is the last gear reduction stage transferring power to the sprocket or wheel. It multiplies torque and determines travel speed and tractive effort.
Final Grade
Definition: Final grade is the finished elevation and slope of an earthwork surface ready for paving, seeding, or structure construction. Achieving final grade within tolerance requires precise machine control and survey verification.
Fixed Displacement Motor
Definition: A fixed displacement motor produces a constant torque-to-speed ratio for a given flow and pressure input. It is simpler and more durable than variable displacement designs but cannot be adjusted for varying load conditions.
Flame Cutting
Definition: Flame cutting uses an oxy-fuel torch to cut steel components for repair and modification. Understanding base metal composition is critical to prevent heat-affected zone cracking when flame cutting high-strength steel components.
Flashpoint
Definition: Flashpoint is the minimum temperature at which a fluid can ignite when exposed to an open flame. Hydraulic fluid flashpoint determines fire risk in high-temperature environments and influences fluid selection for underground and forestry applications.
Float Position
Definition: Float position is a control valve setting that allows both sides of a cylinder to connect to tank, enabling the attachment to follow ground contours freely under gravity. Used for blade float, bucket float, and ripper float operations.
Float Valve
Definition: A float valve allows the boom to lower freely under gravity, reducing hydraulic energy use during lowering and improving blade or bucket float function.
Flow Divider
Definition: A flow divider splits hydraulic flow into two or more equal streams to synchronize multiple cylinders or motors. It is used in crane outrigger systems and side-by-side cylinder applications requiring coordinated movement.
Flush Mount
Definition: Flush mount refers to components installed level with the surrounding surface. In undercarriage design, flush-mounted track roller guards protect rollers without adding protrusions that could catch on obstacles.
Frame Leveling
Definition: Frame leveling allows the telehandler chassis to tilt to maintain load stability on uneven ground. It improves safety and placement accuracy.
Frequency (Compactor)
Definition: Frequency is the number of vibration cycles per minute in a compactor drum. Higher frequency suits granular soils; lower frequency is used for cohesive materials.
Front Idler
Definition: The front idler guides the track chain at the front of the undercarriage and maintains track tension. Wear affects track alignment and overall undercarriage life.
Fuel Tank Capacity
Definition: Fuel tank capacity affects operating range between refueling. Actual runtime depends on duty cycle, idle time, and work intensity.
Full-Turn Tipping Load
Definition: Full-turn tipping load is tipping load while turning, often lower than straight-line values. It matters for real jobsite handling where turning is constant.
G.E.T. (Ground Engaging Tools)
Definition: Ground engaging tools include bucket teeth, cutting edges, and wear plates. Selecting the correct G.E.T. for material type significantly affects productivity and wear costs.
Grade Control
Definition: Grade control systems use GPS, lasers, or sonic sensors to guide the machine blade or bucket to a target elevation, reducing rework and improving accuracy.
Gradeability
Definition: Gradeability is the maximum slope a machine can climb under specified conditions. It is useful for haul-road and site planning but must be read with speed/load assumptions.
Grapple
Definition: A grapple is used for handling brush, logs, and debris. It often requires third function hydraulics and benefits from high-flow in some applications.
Gross Power
Definition: Gross power is engine output measured at the flywheel without certain accessory loads. It can look higher than net power and must be compared only when the standard and configuration match.
Ground Clearance
Definition: Ground clearance is the distance from lowest machine point to ground. It matters for rough terrain and reducing underbody contact risk.
Ground Contact Length
Definition: Ground contact length is the track length in contact with the ground. Longer contact can improve traction and reduce ground pressure for a given weight.
Ground Pressure
Definition: Ground pressure is the machine’s weight distributed over the contact area. Lower ground pressure improves flotation on soft ground; it can be a key differentiator for dozers and tracked machines.
Hammer / Breaker
Definition: A hydraulic breaker uses auxiliary hydraulics to deliver repeated impact energy for demolition. The key specs are required flow/pressure, impact energy class, and carrier stability.
Heaped Material vs Struck Material
Definition: Heaped material includes a piled mound; struck is level. This difference can be significant and is a frequent source of misleading “bigger bucket” claims.
High-Flow Hydraulics
Definition: High-flow hydraulics is an enhanced auxiliary circuit used for demanding attachments. Continuous-flow capability is the key metric.
Hinge Pin Height
Definition: Hinge pin height is the maximum height of the loader linkage pivot. It influences dump clearance and stockpile/truck loading performance.
Hook Block
Definition: A hook block is the pulley and hook assembly suspended from the crane boom. The number of parts of line determines maximum load capacity and line speed.
Hydraulic Accumulator

Hydraulic Filtration
Definition: Hydraulic filtration captures contamination that accelerates wear. Filter rating, bypass behavior, and service intervals affect reliability and cost of ownership.
Hydraulic Flow
Definition: Hydraulic flow is the volume of oil delivered per unit time. Flow (with pressure) determines hydraulic power—critical for cycle times and attachment performance.
Hydraulic Horsepower
Definition: Hydraulic horsepower is the usable hydraulic power available to do work, derived from flow and pressure. It is a strong single-number proxy for attachment capability when compared like-for-like.
Hydraulic Oil Capacity
Definition: Hydraulic oil capacity is total system fluid volume. Higher capacity can improve thermal stability, but cooling design and duty cycle are decisive.
Hydraulic Thumb
Definition: A hydraulic thumb helps grip irregular materials (rocks, debris, logs). It relies on auxiliary hydraulics and changes effective working envelope.
Hydrostatic Transmission
Definition: Hydrostatic drives use hydraulic pumps/motors for smooth control and fine speed modulation. Efficiency can vary by load and travel speed.
Idler
Definition: An idler is an unpowered track roller or wheel that guides the track. Front idlers set track tension; carrier rollers support the upper track run.
Inboard Wet Disc Brakes
Definition: Inboard wet disc brakes run in oil, providing longer service life and more consistent braking performance than dry drum brakes in heavy-duty applications.
Lift Capacity
