Lift Chart Derating
Definition: Lift chart derating reduces allowable load for certain configurations (e.g., no outriggers, tires vs tracks, higher radius). If you skip derating rules, you will overestimate safe capacity.
Lift Height
Definition: Lift height is maximum vertical raise of the loader arms (often referenced at hinge pin). It is central for truck loading and material handling.
Lift-Over Height
Definition: Lift-over height is the maximum height at which a loader can carry a load over an obstacle. It differs from dump height and affects operational flexibility.
Line Pull
Definition: Line pull is the rated pulling force of a winch at single line. Actual system pull depends on the number of lines and sheave arrangement in the rigging setup.
Load Chart
Definition: A load chart shows allowable lift capacity across radius/height/boom angle. It is the authoritative reference for telehandlers and cranes.
Load Radius
Definition: Load radius is the horizontal distance from the crane centerline to the lifted load. Capacity decreases as load radius increases; always check the load chart at the correct radius.
Load-Sensing Hydraulics
Definition: Load-sensing hydraulics adjusts pump output based on demand, improving efficiency and multi-function control. It can deliver smoother operation and better fuel economy in real work cycles.
Lock-Up (Torque Converter)
Definition: Lock-up mechanically connects the drivetrain to reduce slippage and heat, improving travel efficiency on longer hauls or steady-state operation.
Luffing
Definition: Luffing is the raising and lowering of the crane boom to change load radius. Luffing jib cranes work in tighter urban sites than fixed jib configurations.
Machine Control
Definition: Machine control integrates GPS and design data to automatically guide blade and bucket movements, reducing operator skill dependency and improving accuracy.
Material Density
Definition: Material density (lbs/yd³ or kg/m³) changes real payload for a given bucket/body volume. Ignoring density leads to overload or under-utilization.
Max Forward Reach
Definition: Max forward reach is the farthest horizontal reach of the boom. Capacity drops rapidly with reach—use the chart, not a single headline number.
Max Lift Height (Telehandler)
Definition: Max lift height is the highest fork/attachment height under defined configuration. It is only meaningful when paired with the load chart at that height.
Moil Point
Definition: A moil point is a conical chisel tool used in hydraulic breakers for hard rock and concrete demolition, concentrating impact energy for maximum penetration.
Moldboard Length
Definition: Moldboard length affects coverage per pass and ability to roll material. It should be considered with power, articulation, and the type of finish required.
Mulcher
Definition: A mulcher is a high-demand attachment for land clearing. It requires high-flow hydraulics, correct cooling, and careful ROC/stability management.
Negative Flow Control
Definition: Negative flow control reduces pump output when control valves are centered, improving efficiency at idle and low-demand conditions in hydraulic excavators.
Net Power
Definition: Net power is engine output available to do work after standard accessory losses (e.g., alternator, fan). It is typically the most apples-to-apples rating when compared under the same standard.
Number of Cylinders
Definition: Cylinder count influences smoothness, torque delivery, and packaging. Compare it as context, not as a performance metric by itself.
Open-Center Hydraulics
Definition: Open-center systems route flow back to tank until a valve is actuated. They are simpler but can be less efficient in multi-function work.
Operating Weight
Definition: Operating weight is the machine’s working weight in a typical configuration (fuel, fluids, operator, and commonly fitted components). It is the fastest way to identify size class.
Operator Safety
Definition: Operator safety includes stability practices, load handling, visibility, and safe operating procedures. A safer workflow is usually faster and cheaper long-term.
Oscillation
Definition: Oscillation is axle/bogie movement that keeps wheels in contact over uneven terrain. It supports traction and stability on rough haul roads.
Outriggers
Definition: Outriggers are stabilizers that increase lift stability and raise allowable capacity. Always compare numbers with outrigger status clearly specified.
Overall Height
Definition: Overall height is maximum height in a defined configuration (cab/ROPS/beacon). It matters for transport compliance and working under obstructions.
Overall Length
Definition: Overall length is total machine length in a defined configuration. It affects transport, maneuvering, and working in tight spaces.
Overall Width
Definition: Overall width affects access, trailer fit, and work in confined areas. Verify whether width includes tires, tracks, mirrors, or optional counterweights.
Overburden
Definition: Overburden is material overlying a mineral deposit or target layer. Removing it efficiently is a primary concern in mining and large-scale earthmoving operations.
Parking Brake
Definition: A parking brake holds the machine stationary when not in use. Spring-applied hydraulic-release designs provide fail-safe braking if hydraulic pressure is lost.
PAT Blade
Definition: A PAT (power-angle-tilt) blade can angle and tilt hydraulically, improving versatility for shaping, backfilling, and windrowing.
Payload
Definition: Payload is the maximum material weight the machine is rated to carry. It is safety- and production-critical; overloading increases wear and risk.
Pin-On vs Coupler Bucket
Definition: Pin-on buckets mount directly; coupler buckets mount via a coupler. Couplers add convenience but can add offset/weight and affect lift/reach.
Positive Flow Control
Definition: Positive flow control delivers pump output proportional to joystick input signal, providing responsive and efficient hydraulic control in modern excavators.
Power Standards (SAE / ISO)
Definition: Power standards define how engine power is measured (what accessories are included, test conditions, and reporting). Matching the same standard is essential before comparing net or gross power figures.
Power-to-Weight Ratio
Definition: Power-to-weight compares engine power to operating weight. It can indicate responsiveness, but traction and hydraulics often dominate jobsite productivity.
Powershift Transmission
Definition: A powershift transmission changes gears under load. It is common on wheel loaders and dozers where sustained push and travel are required.
Propel Speed
Definition: Propel speed is the maximum travel speed of a tracked or wheeled machine. Two-speed systems allow switching between high-speed roading and low-speed working modes.
PTO (Power Take-Off)
Definition: PTO provides mechanical power to attachments on some machine types. In heavy equipment contexts it’s less common than hydraulics, but where present it needs rated speed and power matching.
Quick Attach (Skid Steer / CTL)
Definition: Quick attach systems allow fast swapping of skid steer/CTL attachments. Confirm coupler standard and hydraulic coupling method to avoid fit issues.
Quick Coupler
Definition: A quick coupler allows rapid swapping of excavator tools. Compatibility (pin size, offsets, safety locks) matters as much as speed.
Rated Operating Capacity (ROC)
Definition: Rated Operating Capacity (ROC) is a conservative working load rating for skid steers and compact track loaders, typically defined as a percentage of tipping load (commonly 35–50% depending on method).
Reach
Definition: Reach describes how far the machine can work horizontally. It is usually measured at specific height/geometry conditions—always confirm the reference point before comparing.
Regen
Definition: Regeneration burns soot from the DPF. It can be passive or active; correct duty cycle and operating practices minimize interruptions.
Relief Pressure
Definition: Relief pressure is the maximum system pressure allowed before the relief valve opens. It influences force output, but system design and limits still govern performance.
Retarder
Definition: A retarder assists braking on long descents, reducing brake wear and improving control. It is important for haul roads with sustained grades.
Return-to-Tank Flow
Definition: Return-to-tank flow is oil flowing back to the reservoir. Some attachments require a dedicated low-backpressure return line to avoid overheating and performance loss.
Ripper
Definition: A ripper breaks up hard ground before pushing or grading. Ripper effectiveness depends on machine weight, traction, and implement design.
Ripper (Dozer Attachment)
Definition: A ripper is a rear attachment used to break up hard ground before pushing or grading. Ripper performance depends on machine weight, traction, and hydraulic/structural design.
Rollback Angle
Definition: Rollback angle is the maximum rearward tilt of the bucket. More rollback helps retain material when traveling or climbing.
ROPS / FOPS
Definition: ROPS and FOPS are protective standards for roll-over and falling objects. Verify ratings for your risk profile and jobsite rules.
