RPM (Rated Speed)
Definition: RPM is engine speed. Rated power is usually published at a specific RPM; comparing power at different RPMs can mislead unless you consider the torque curve and operating range.
Service Intervals
Definition: Service intervals define maintenance frequency for filters, fluids, and inspections. They influence downtime and total cost of ownership.
Side Shift
Definition: Side shift moves the grader moldboard laterally without repositioning the machine—critical for shaping ditches and working close to obstacles.
Sound Power Level
Definition: Sound power level is a standardized measure of noise output. It matters for regulations, urban sites, and operator fatigue management.
Sound Pressure Level
Definition: Sound pressure level describes noise at a measurement point (often the operator position). It relates directly to perceived loudness and comfort.
Spreader Bar
Definition: A spreader bar is a rigging device that keeps sling legs separated during a lift, preventing compression loads on the lifted object and controlling load orientation.
Stability
Definition: Stability is the machine’s resistance to tipping and loss of control under load. It depends on center of gravity, track/tire stance, counterweighting, and work radius—often more important than raw force.
Static Linear Load
Definition: Static linear load is the compactor drum weight per unit width, determining surface pressure applied to asphalt or soil. It is a primary selection criterion for roller compactors.
Static Tipping Load
Definition: Static tipping load is the load at which the machine begins to tip under defined static conditions. It is a foundation metric for ROC on compact loaders.
Stick Force (Tearout)
Definition: Stick force (often called tearout) measures the digging force generated by the arm/stick cylinder in an excavator. It complements bucket breakout force and can matter more in trenching.
Stick Length
Definition: Stick (arm) length influences dig depth and reach. Longer sticks may improve reach but can alter breakout/stick force leverage.
Swing Brake
Definition: A swing brake holds the excavator upperstructure stationary when not slewing. It prevents unintended rotation on slopes and during attachment changes.
Swing Speed
Definition: Swing speed is how fast the upperstructure rotates. Peak speed matters less than control, acceleration, and usable torque in real cycles.
Swing Torque
Definition: Swing torque is rotational force for upperstructure rotation. Higher swing torque can help maintain speed under load and improve cycle time.
Tail Swing Radius
Definition: Tail swing radius is the maximum rear overhang while rotating. Smaller tail swing improves work in tight spaces, but can affect stability and service access.
Telematics
Definition: Telematics systems collect and transmit machine data including location, fuel consumption, fault codes, and idle time to fleet management platforms for remote monitoring.
Third Function Hydraulics
Definition: Third function hydraulics adds an auxiliary circuit (often on loaders) to operate grapples, clamps, or other tools independently of lift/tilt.
Tier 4 Final / Stage V
Definition: Tier 4 Final (US) and Stage V (EU) emissions standards require aftertreatment. They influence maintenance routines and operating best practices.
Tiltrotator
Definition: A tiltrotator enables tool rotation and tilt, improving versatility. It adds weight and changes lift/geometry—check charts and reach impacts.
Tipping Load
Definition: Tipping load is the load at which a machine begins to tip under defined conditions. For skid steers/CTLs it is often used to derive Rated Operating Capacity (ROC).
Tooth Adapter
Definition: A tooth adapter is the intermediate part between the bucket lip and the replaceable tooth point. Adapter style affects tooth retention strength and replacement speed.
Torque
Definition: Torque is rotational force produced by the engine. High torque at useful RPM supports pushing, digging, and maintaining power under load—often more important than peak horsepower for heavy work.
Torque Converter
Definition: A torque converter multiplies torque at low speed and allows smooth starts. Lock-up features can improve efficiency during travel.
Torque Rise
Definition: Torque rise is how much torque increases as engine speed drops under load. Higher torque rise can help maintain push and reduce stalling in heavy work.
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
Definition: TCO includes purchase price plus fuel, maintenance, wear parts, downtime, and resale. The best spec sheet is the one that predicts real cost per hour.
Track Gauge
Definition: Track gauge is the distance between track centers. Wider gauge improves stability, especially when lifting or working on slopes.
Track Shoe Width
Definition: Track shoe width affects traction, flotation, and ground disturbance. Wider shoes reduce ground pressure but can change wear and steering response.
Tractive Effort
Definition: Tractive effort is force available at wheels/tracks to move and push. It depends on torque, gearing, and traction—and often limits real productivity.
Transport Class
Definition: Transport class groups the practical constraints for hauling the machine (weight/width/height, permits, trailer selection). Check early to avoid costly surprises.
Travel Motor
Definition: Travel motors drive the tracks. Their torque and control influence gradeability, travel speed, and performance on slopes or soft ground.
Travel Speed
Definition: Travel speed is the machine’s maximum ground speed. It matters for large sites, haul distances, and repositioning—but should not be mistaken for work-cycle productivity.
Trunnion Mount
Definition: A trunnion mount supports a hydraulic cylinder at its mid-body, allowing angular movement in multiple planes. Used where cylinder alignment changes during operation.
Turbocharged
Definition: A turbocharger forces more air into the engine, enabling higher power density. Real-world value depends on boost control, cooling, and duty cycle.
Turning Radius
Definition: Turning radius measures how tight the machine can turn. It matters on confined sites, stockpiles, and urban work.
Two-Speed Travel
Definition: Two-speed travel provides a higher travel gear for moving around the site. It improves convenience, but productivity still depends on cycle time and attachment performance.
Undercarriage
Definition: Undercarriage refers to the track frame, rollers, idlers, sprockets, and track shoes. It is a major cost-of-ownership driver—especially in abrasive or high-travel applications.
Undercarriage Wear
Definition: Undercarriage wear is driven by abrasives, travel distance, turns, and tension. It is a primary ownership cost driver for tracked machines.
Variable-Displacement Pump
Definition: A variable-displacement pump changes output flow to match demand, improving efficiency and controllability compared with fixed-displacement systems.
Vibration (Whole-Body / Hand-Arm)
Definition: Vibration affects fatigue and long-term health. It depends on machine design, seat/suspension, ground conditions, and operating style.
Wheel Lean
Definition: Wheel lean tilts the front wheels to counter side forces and improve control on slopes or windrows. It matters for stability and finish quality.
Wheelbase
Definition: Wheelbase is distance between axles. Longer wheelbase often improves stability but increases turning radius and can reduce maneuverability.
Working Radius
Definition: Working radius is the horizontal distance from the machine’s rotation center to the load. As radius increases, allowable lift decreases sharply—this is why lift charts are radius-based.
Zero Tail Swing
Definition: Zero tail swing machines keep the rear within the track width when rotating. They work well in confined areas, but may have tradeoffs in stability or lift charts.
