Lift capacity and stability: how to compare safely

A plain-English explanation of spec definitions and the correct order to compare them.

This guide is designed to be used with Specs Explorer and Compare. The objective is simple: keep your shortlist inside the correct class, avoid apples-to-oranges comparisons, and make a confident like-for-like decision.

  • Start by confirming the job type and the size class you actually need.
  • Validate the “Big 3”: operating weight, engine power standard, and working geometry.
  • Only after the class match, compare hydraulics, breakout force / lift, and cycle time.
  • Treat missing core specs as incomplete until verified.

Decision checklist (copy/paste into your workflow)

  • Class first: confirm operating weight band (or the best size signal for this machine type).
  • Power: confirm net vs gross and the rating standard.
  • Geometry: confirm reach / clearance / depth and the measurement reference point.
  • Performance drivers: compare hydraulic flow + pressure, then breakout force / lift as needed.
  • Verification: check configuration notes (bucket type, linkage, boom/stick, counterweight, tires/tracks).
  • Decision: shortlist 2 models and compare side by side.

How to apply this in Specs Explorer

  • Open Specs Explorer and filter by the brand/category you are evaluating.
  • Scan the “Big 3” fields first and remove out-of-band models.
  • Add 2 candidates to Compare and keep notes on assumptions (standards, configuration, measurement points).
  • If a key spec is missing, mark it as “verify” and do not treat the model as final until confirmed.

  • Lift Capacity: Lift capacity should be compared with stability context and measurement points; higher is not always safer.
  • Stability: Stability is application-dependent (lifting/truck loading). Check lift charts where applicable.

Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)

  • Mixing net vs gross power or comparing different rating standards.
  • Comparing heaped vs struck capacities without realizing it.
  • Assuming geometry is measured the same way across spec sheets.
  • Over-weighting one number (e.g., breakout force) before confirming the class match.

If you are comparing two models and one looks “better” on a single metric, pause. First confirm the class match (weight band), then confirm geometry. If those don’t match, you are comparing different machines—not different performance.
